Why Supervision Matters
Integrating Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) into clinical practice takes time. Even after completing training, clinicians often discover that the real learning begins when they start applying MBT in their day-to-day work.
Supervision offers the bridge between understanding the theory and confidently using it in practice.
In supervision, clinicians learn to:
-
Recognize moments when mentalizing breaks down, in themselves or their clients.
-
Reflect on communication patterns and emotional responses.
-
Apply the MBT framework to complex, real-world clinical situations.
-
Strengthen their ability to stay curious, grounded, and connected under pressure.
Supervision is where the model comes alive. It’s a space for continued learning, clinical validation, and professional growth.
What to Expect
Supervision with the Mentalizing Initiative is supportive, reflective, and firmly grounded in MBT principles. Sessions typically include:
-
case discussions to explore mentalizing challenges in practice
-
roleplays that connect MBT concepts to lived clinical moments
-
feedback and guidance from an approved MBT supervisor
-
ongoing reflection to help clinicians build confidence and maintain a mentalizing stance.
Many participants find that supervision is where MBT concepts starts to "click."

At MI, We're Building a Movement
The Mentalizing Initiative's mission is to train clinicians to be more mentalizing. Supervision is an essential part of that mission, it helps clinicians integrate the model into their ongoing work, stay connected, and bring mentalizing more fully into their professional lives.
